CPP Film (Cast Polypropylene Film)
Cast Polypropylene (CPP) film is one of the most important categories of polymer films used in the flexible packaging industry. It is manufactured from polypropylene (PP) through the cast extrusion process, in which molten polymer is distributed onto chilled rollers and rapidly cooled to form a uniform, transparent, and flexible sheet. These physical properties distinguish CPP from other polypropylene films and make it a key material for modern applications in food, pharmaceutical, and consumer product packaging.
Manufacturing Process
The production of CPP films involves several main stages:
- Extrusion: Polypropylene granules are melted in an extruder and forced through a flat die to create a homogeneous molten sheet.
- Casting: The molten film is precisely spread and quenched over chilled metal rollers, promoting rapid solidification, thickness uniformity, and excellent optical clarity.
- Slitting & Quality Control: The cooled film undergoes inspection for thickness, tensile strength, surface roughness, and clarity, then slit and wound into rolls of required widths.
CPP can be produced in monolayer or multilayer (co extruded) structures. Multi layer films combine different resin grades and functional additives to improve heat resistance, moisture and gas barrier properties, and seal strength. The simplicity and cost efficiency of cast extrusion make CPP an increasingly attractive choice for high performance yet economical packaging solutions.
Key Characteristics
High transparency and gloss for attractive product visibility
Excellent heat sealing performance for automated packaging lines
Superior ink and adhesive adhesion on treated surfaces
Smooth machinability on high speed converting and packaging equipment
Effective resistance to grease, oil, and mild chemicals
Robust mechanical strength with strong tear and puncture resistance
Reliable moisture barrier performance to maintain product freshness
Low static properties ensuring stable feeding and handling
Applications
CPP films are widely utilized in diverse packaging areas, including:
- Food packaging: bread, confectionery, fresh produce, frozen foods, and ready to cook meals.
- Non food packaging: textiles, agricultural goods, hygiene products, and technical components.
- Lamination & multi layer structures: for improved barrier and mechanical performance when combined with other films.
- Thermal packaging: highly suited to cold storage or heat processing applications without loss of dimensional stability or clarity.
For example, in bakery packaging, the softness and flexibility of CPP help prevent product crushing and preserve presentation quality. In frozen food applications, its strong chill resistance prevents cracking or edge damage during deep freeze storage.
